Should obese pregnant women change their diet???
I found this article on yahoo health pertaining to obese pregnant women. It's pretty interesting and I want to give you my spin on what I think is most important when pregnant.
Obese pregnant women.
The concern is whether or not obese pregnant women should diet to improve not just their health, but their babies health too. Just a reminder you should have a a diet that induces optimal health, lots of energy, and zero weight gain. Dieting does not mean restriction or skipping meals when hungry.
So, if the soon to be mom is obese what do you think her baby fetus is eating? Let me tell you.
When your obese you have seriously damaged your fat tissue regulation (Truth about fat), have become insulin and leptin resistant, and a host of other metabolic problems--- bottom line is that it is self induced. When your obese and pregnant your baby fetus will absorb whatever you are eating. So let's think. If your obese then you are most certainly eating a high carb/sugar, low fat diet.
* Quick note, low fat can also mean eating less meat. People think that eating meat is dangerous when in fact it is not (more on that on another day)! Carbs drive insulin to store excess carbs into fat. Eating protein and fat does not!
If you are eating a high carb/grain diet then your fetus is also taking in a bunch of carbohydrates. And if you know your science (Are you eating healthy) then you must know that at an early age the fetus will start to develop early signs of insulin resistance. That means, when born, the pregnant/obese mother will deliver a larger baby--- because the high carb/grain consumption never stopped, further enhancing insulin driving fat storage!
And that's not all. What types of eating patterns do you think the newly born will adopt as he/she gets older? That's right, they will follow their parents. When the baby becomes a teenager they have obviously already been genetically influenced to be insulin resistant. As a result, they will continue to get larger, are more likely to get sick, suffer from diabetes, and/or cardio vascular disease.
Do yourself a favor and change the way you eat for the sake of your health and your child's health. Eat foods that control your insulin that keep it in a desired zone: any type of animal meat, green leafy vegetables, moderate fruit, some nuts and seeds, and animal fat. Toss out grains, refined carbs, sugars, heavy starches, dairy, and legumes.
