Fruit and weight loss---Absolutraining (Long Beach)

How much fruit you should have is a dicey question to answer. To avoid confusion lets focus on how much fruit to have when your desire is to drop fat and fit into skinny jeans.

Let's get to it shall we---Fruit is loaded with antioxidants, fiber and other nutrients. It is sweet and delicious and it follows along with Absolutraining's nutritional philosophy--- Eat PALEO! Yes it is healthy but it's not for everyone and it sure as hell can cause problems when you want to improve your body comp.

Quick run down, do you remember the Why you gain weight article, well fruit tends to fill up your liver glycogen (storage units) a lot faster than any other carb. Like I said fruit is totally cool (having some every so often) but when your trying to lose fat it can be bad news. Reason is fruit is loaded with fructose. Fructose is found in candy, ice cream, syrups, actually it is found every where (more on that on a later day)!

Fructose is not so popular to your liver as it is linked to weight gain and obesity. Fructose has roughly 3 times the speed of filling your liver glycogen versus chowing down Paleo friendly green vegetables. Remember when your liver and muscle glycogen are full, any extra sugar or fructose into the blood stream will converted be into fat! So if you want to lose weight ease up on the fruit or pass it up all together if you have the will power.

A second point to mention is that people often eat a whole lot of fruit and ignore green veggies. Here's why? Fruit is sugary! It is much more comforting to eat berries, apples, and bananas because of the immediate sugar release into the blood stream. It soothes the brain and gives it comfort. Kind of like crack! Eating fruit is almost like having a Twix or Snickers bar but without the chocolate, very sweet, satisfying and great taste! It is also extremely easy to overeat! If you don't believe me go out and see how many strawberries and watermelon you can eat in one sitting.

As a simple test try eating one cup of strawberries at one sitting and a cup of vegetables on the next and notice which is easier to chow down. Unless you are Bugs Bunny I can guarantee it is going to be fruit.

Don't substitute fruit for your veggies, I say lose the fruit (for the most part) and focus on having more (and more) dark greens in your diet. Consuming fruit in an insulin resistance environment is a bad idea and will only cause a headache to your results. For the record fruit is healthy and loaded with anti oxidants and fiber, I don't mean to bash them by any means. I am only trying to make it clear that if you want to lose weight then I suggest opting out on fruit and eat the right type of green carbs (Are you eating healthy)!
