Stress makes you FAT!
Don't mess with good old grouchy grannie!
OK, may be some of you think this is bull crap, but stay with me here. Let me paint a little picture and see if you fit this profile.
What is stress??? Stress is everything and everywhere.
- Environmental
- Work
- Lack of sleep
- Relationship
- FOOD!!! (grains, legumes, dairy)
- Road rage
- Over training
- Chronic cardio
- Starvation
- Restricting calories
Stress is normal, we are built to deal with short acute stress in our lives. It traces back to our ancestral roots running from saber tooth tigers or in modern days, running from a guy with a gun!
Chronic or lingering stress is what makes us FAT! The root cause, “cortisol.”
Stress releases cortisol from your adrenals into your bloodstream. This is an immediate release of stored sugar from your liver (glycogen). This is not good, especially if it’s chronic. Too much cortisol is similar to eating a snickers bar, frequent sugar released in the bloodstream, but without eating anything!!!
As we know (if not we will save it for another article) having high blood sugar causes poor insulin sensitivity resulting in the accumulation of fat. A quick self test, lift up your shirt and look at your gut or what is more commonly known as your umbilical site. If you see something “hanging” then there is 99.9% chance you have too much stress!
Remember stress is everywhere. You just need to reduce it. Get more sleep, 8 hours! Find a job that eases your mind and health. Clean up your diet, and OF COURSE remember to EXERCISE. Having a poor diet stresses your gut causing inflammation. Toss out all grains and sweet goodies. Reading this may make you stressed…but at least now you KNOW!
